Film Studies: Box Office

Box Office Statistics

Box Office Mojo: Domestic and overseas grosses by film, by date, and by MPAA rating back to 1989. Includes both wide and limited release films.

Worldwide Box Office: Box office receipts by film and by year from 1911 through this year (limited data for early years).

Theatrical Market Statistics / now called THEME (Motion Picture Association of America): Annual collection of global box office statistics and demographic profiles of U.S. moviegoers. No data on individual films beyond the top 25 each year.

Mintel: Market research reports on U.S. and U.K. industries; sample reports include "Cinemas" and "Video Sales & Rentals." Reports are irregularly published, so not every subject is covered every year. The first time you use Mintel, you must set up an individual account using your UGA email account.

MRI+ (must use Firefox or Internet Explorer for MRI to function correctly): Basic consumer demographic information on movie theater attendance, video purchases and rentals, and use of streaming services. The first time you use MRI, you must set up an individual account using your UGA email account. Consumer behavior information is under "Mediamark Reporter." Choose "Product" for the date you want. You may then search by keyword or browse categories -- movie theater attendance is under "Leisure/Sports" while home viewing is under "Electronics."
