JRMC 8020: Public Opinion

Created for JRMC8020, but useful as an interdisciplinary guide to public opinion and polling, with an emphasis on method and evaluation.

Polling Databases

iPoll (Ropers)

Easy to use, plus, iPoll has a more robust search options, download options, and source information than some other databases. You can make your own individual online storage folder and authenticate usingUGA's single sign-on page (SSO), which gives you one less password to memorize or store.

Statista

If a poll is covered in Statista, you may be able to link to sources, and original published reports. Most Statista polls will download to PDF, Excel, or image formats.Search strategy is bit more important. You may want to search by topic rather than by "opinion poll." Be sure to use the limits on the right side of the page. The Location limit is especially useful when you want to focus on the US.

Health Poll Database

This is a component of Roper's iPoll, focusing on Health topics. The section will open on concept mapping, allowing you to explore terms and connectedness of topics.

Polling the Nations

Quick and easy to use, PtN lets you find specific polling questions, with results. It will list some basics about the poll, such as the format (ex: phone) and the source. You can link to the larger poll to see the full context. You may not be able to link to the source, or get detailed information about how the poll was conducted. You can share links to the polling information, but it does not download to PDF, Excel, or image formats.

Other Polling Resources

Datasets

For international data sets you can download from AmericasBarometer LAPOP. LAPOP Lab’s largest survey research project, is a periodic study of 34 countries in the Western Hemisphere, with stratified nationally representative samples drawn in each country, a common questionnaire core, and country-specific modules. You will need to understand datasets already, and the search on the download site is very basic. You may want to just browse by year.

To interact with the data BEFORE downloading a set, or instead of downloading, you need to use the Data Playground. Data Playground is much more intuitive, but read the instructions at the bottom of the page.
