Videos and Guides for EndNote 2025

Check out these videos from EndNote's publisher, Clarivate. The PC version video is on top, and the Mac version is below. Please go to the EndNote for Mac tab for more assistance.

Proper Care and Feeding of Your EndNote Library

EndNote libraries are made up of two parts: the .enl file and the .data folder. These two parts must be kept together. Both are needed for the library to work correctly. If you have a Mac, you can create a .enlp file, which keeps the parts together as a package.

EndNote libraries should be kept on your computer's hard drive. Storing and editing libraries on a network drive can lead to corruption and performance issues. Don't keep in Teams or OneSource.

  • We suggest that Mac EndNote Libraries be kept in the Applications folder. This prevents the library from being stored by both EndNote online and iCloud, which can cause file pathway and file corruption issues.

Don't store the EndNote library in cloud-syncing services such as DropBox, OneDrive, iCloud, Box, SugarSync, etc. Over time your libraries can be corrupted. If you briefly store a library in a cloud service, it is vital to download the library before opening it, rather than trying to run from the cloud, and to have other back up methods.

Uninstall your previous version of EndNote before installing a new version.
