What to Crochet

Ravelry.com This social media site is known for knitting, but is has an extensive library of crochet patterns, too. Includes discussion boards and a database of 250K patterns. Free registration is required.

Crochet is particularly suited to working "in the round" and for lace-type items.

  • Animgurumi - 3D shapes and stuffed animals.
  • Hats - with or without a place for a ponytail.
  • Baskets - because we all need a place to put our stuff.
  • Snowflakes - a little more advanced because of the thin yarn, but a quick project.

Crochet is also popular for dishcloths and face scrubbies, blankets of all sizes and weights, shawls and scarves. You can also make more advanced clothing and household items. If you can think of it, someone has probably made a crochet version of it.

STEM crochet

Crochet can be used to communicate STEM concepts. The results are fun to look at whether you understand the concepts of not.

Crochet history

Crochet is not as old of a craft as knitting, but the adaptability of crochet has led to new innovations over the centuries. There are entire families of crochet styles such as Irish crochet and tapestry crochet.
