Searching in the larger University System of Georgia Catalog |
If you have already done a search with terms in the search box(es), you can change from from UGA Library Catalog to University of Georgia Institutions, select Search and the search will rerun and bring back new search results in the larger shared catalog. You can also just start a new search without using terms from your previous search.
Searching in the USG catalog looks like the UGA Catalog. All of the search strategies used in the UGA Library Catalog ocan be used in this larger, shared catalog. but when you look at the results not all of the items will be available here at UGA.
When you look at some of the records you will not find a UGA call number and location. You will see that the item may be held at another USG school. In the example the book is held by Georgia State University.

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) page allows you to request materials from libraries around the world. The library has a web page with 4 different forms
There are any number of databases, including Google and Google Scholar where you may find citations for materials you might want to request.
Worldcat is the largest catalog you can search for books, scores, audio, video, etc. Like the UGA Library Catalog Worldcat IS NOT a source for articles. Worldcat can be accessed via the Music Guide where it is under the Books tab or via the Library Home Pages A-Z Database List
Searching Worldcat |
WorldCat begins with an Advanced Search with 3 boxes which default to searching Keyword in box 1, Title in box 2 and Author in box 3.
Below the search boxes are several limiters are important to use to manage the large number of results.
WorldCat combines thousands of catalogs and uses the same uniform titles and subjects as the UGA catalog, but doing a search will bring thousands of results since the database is so large. Try to be as specific as you can with your search terms and use the various indexes (Author, Title, and Subject) Rather than searching just the keyword index
For example, I can use the subject index and use a subject I already found when searching the UGA catalog (Women in Opera) rather than just using the keywords opera AND women
The results list is smaller (30 items) and a more focused set of results by using the subject women in opera. . The search did not use Format limiter as the subject Women in Opera is only applied to print items. By using the subject the search returned books, theses, and dissertations. Many of these items are in a foreign language and demonstrate the wide coverage of WorldCat.
As in the catalog, reviewing the individual records provides additional information, and if you would like to request the item through Interlibrary Loan make sure to scroll to the bottom of the record and record the OCLC Number which is the best way to ensure you get the exact items (edition, editor, arrangement) that you want.
