The Curriculum Materials Library houses an impressive tabletop game collection. Use this guide to view the different games we have available using the A-Z listings. Games are also broken up by games for young players (starting at 3+ years), quick games (games that can be finished in 15 minutes or less), as well as some old standard classics. Each entry has a description of the game, a link to find it in the catalog, as well as quick overview of players, time, and type of game. When possible, game entries also include a how to play video.
We're so glad you asked! Let's take you back to 1938, where Johan Huizinga in his work Homo Ludens describes play as essential to civilization. Play exists in and through all of us. Many decades later, Brian Sutton-Smith describes play as being particularly important for all species for creating new flexible behaviors to allow for our own survival (Sutton-Smith, 1997). Play has been thought to be integral in our own development and understanding of rules and social constructs, as well as for our own joy and pleasure. Play can take many forms, one of those being games. Games allow for critical thinking, use of dexterity, fine and gross motor skills, and social development. Games provide us with a shared experience, allowing for us to come together over a common goal or interest. Games also allow us to share in joy, challenge, and fun with others. In recent years, tabletop games have found a place among schools and libraries (Mayer, 2010). We hope you enjoy playing!
Yes! All of our games have a 2-week loan period with 2 automatic renewals for UGA students, staff, faculty, and UGA outside borrowers. Games do need to be checked out and returned to the Curriculum Materials Library in 207 Aderhold Hall.
