Special Purpose Computers

Outside User Computers:

  • Six computers
  • For anyone without a UGA MyID
  • Must show government-issued photo ID to Security for PIN
  • PINs are good for 90 minutes and each patron can have two PINs per day
  • Can print to WEPA
  • Computers do not have Microsoft Office suite -- need to use Google Docs or Notepad

ADA Computers
These two computers have assistive software and may be accessed with a MyID and password or this login: username: libscholar and password 1DLMLUGA21.

Data Services Computers with SAS: These resources are now included on the two Windows workstations in the Data Studio@Main.

The Data Studio@ Main (3rd floor): When not in use by a class, Data Studio computers are available to anyone with a MyID login. A list of software and a class schedule are on their website. The lab is accessible by UGACard card swipe to all current UGA affiliates.

2nd floor workstation around the side of the staff elevator shaft.  It runs older O.S. to allow access to some ceased business sources:

Laser Disclosure / Global Access disc collection (in racks nearby):  Company reports from late 1980s and early 1990s.

Bring a flash drive.

  1. Go to the 2nd floor around the corner of the staff elevator and start up the workstation. It takes about a minute to completely boot up to the desktop.
  2.  Insert your flash drive if you have one. Note:  the drive letter assigned to the flash drive will be E:
  3. Click on the Global Access icon on the desktop
  4. Search the index for a specific company of interest.  You can include several filters, e.g., filing/report type(s) such as 10-K.  The system will produce a list of available filings/reports for that company in the Laser Disclosure collection.  The information will include the disc number on which each filing appears.  This disc number is on the plastic case holding each disc in the rack to your left.
  5. Pull the relevant discs listed in your index search from the rack. (Pressing the disc inward in its slot in the rack slightly should release the disc so you can remove it from it's slot in the rack.)
  6. Load a disc in the CD-ROM reader in the PC. (To remove the disc from it's plastic case, press the two front corners together to release the hinged lid.) Click on the report you want to save to your flash drive from the index results on the desktop.
  7. To save the report to your flash drive, first select 'print' and then select 'pdf creator' and then save the file to the flash drive.
  8. If you want to read a report at this workstation, you can open up Adobe Acrobat reader on the desktop and open up the report from your flash drive.
  9. When finished, remove your flash drive, the last disc you used, and shut down the workstation.
  10. Leave the discs in their plastic cases on the workstation table. We will refile them.

Compact Disclosure disc collection (in Reserves): Useful for formatted data and information about public companies (financials, executives & directors and stock holdings, etc.) from early 1990s to mid 2000s.

Bring a flash drive.
Search the catalog to see available series, years and months. Most researchers will want the Compact D / SEC series which covers public companies in the U.S. market.
Check out discs at the Circulation Desk

  1. Go to the 2nd floor around the corner of the staff elevator and start up the workstation. It takes about a minute to completely boot up to the desktop.
  2. Insert your flash drive if you have one. Note:  the drive letter assigned to the flash drive will be E:
  3. Place a Compact Disclosure CD in the CD Drive. Give it a moment to mount.
  4. Click the MS-DOS prompt icon on the desktop.
  5. Type Alt+Enter for full screen.
  6. At the command prompt, type D: and press Enter
  7. Type DISC and press Enter to start the software.
  8. Use the arrow keys to move around the menu system (there is no mouse sensitivity).  Menu options also have a highlighted letter or number which is a shortcut for that choice. The ESC key is often used to go back a step.
  9. The software will offer a variety of filters for pulling data.
  10. When you are ready to transfer data (i.e., export), include the drive letter of the flash drive when you enter your file name. For example “E:\CEOS1995.txt”. If you’ve forgotten your jump drive, you can save it instead to “C:\compact\CEOS1995.txt” until you can retrieve it later. E-mail is not supported as this computer is not on the network.  Transfer commands can take a while to complete on this computer.  Ctrl + Break/Pause will abort a transfer command.
  11. When you are finished, remove your flash drive and any discs.  Shut down the workstation.

Room Policies

Group Study Rooms          |        Barr Seminar Room         |     Consultation Room     |     Instruction Lab  |  B2

Small Group Study Rooms Policy

There are exam rooms available at Main. Requestors need to get a key from Security.

Barr Seminar Room (room 131A)

Policy and Booking Calendar. To see who has the room booked, log into LibCal Spaces and check 'Confirmed Bookings.'

Consultation Room

The purpose of the consultation room is to provide a quiet space for librarians to hold research consultations with patrons. The guidelines are meant to make the best use of the space while keeping it primarily available for this purpose.

First priority for use of the room is always given to UGA Libraries’ employees who are meeting with patrons for a research consultation.

Second priority for use of the room is for UGA Libraries’ employees who are developing online tutorials, participating in online meetings or webinars, or training new staff.

If the room is not in use as outlined above, it may be used by:

Other Libraries’ employees (including Coffee & Bagels’ staff) for private appointments (e.g., telemedicine) or meetings such as job interviews or performance evaluations when another room is not available.

UGA students for remote job interviews.

In order to preserve availability for staff use, the room is not to be used for individual or group study. Students needing group study space should be directed to the 1st floor annex, the 4th floor study space, or the Miller Learning Center.

How people outside of Research & Instruction can schedule the room:

Any full-time employee in the Research & Instruction Department will make the reservation in Outlook on the "Main Library Consultation Room" calendar. The requestor’s name and UGA email address should be included in the calendar entry.

The room may be booked no more than one week in advance.

Except for first and second priority use described above, all appointments should last one hour or less.

Instruction Lab

When giving directions, be aware that all signs in the building refer to the room as "Library Instruction Lab." Although the Outlook calendar uses an old name ("MainLib Lab A") no sign in the building uses that name.

Priority use: Priority is always given to library instruction. Although any UGA Libraries' staff may schedule the Instruction Lab, please note that meetings may be asked to relocate if the lab is needed for a class.

The Instruction Lab is generally reserved for librarians meeting with classes and for other Libraries' use. Non-Libraries' units who ask to use the space may be able to use the Barr Seminar Room. If the Barr Room will not suit their needs, direct them to the Tate Center's Campus Reservations form. If they cannot get a room through Campus Reservations, refer them to Kristin Nielsen. Non-Libraries' units may not use the room during the peak instruction periods of August - October and January - March (breaks excepted).

B2

B2 is not controlled by the Libraries. Security has a key to the room. Center for Teaching and Learning supports the classroom's technology, and you can call their office when someone has accidentally locked the instructor podium or there are tech problems. Campus Reservations schedules the room. The only entrance is through the lobby and requires stairs. Faculty need to speak with their department to have a class relocated if a student cannot use stairs.
