Scholarly Research

Web of Science (Web of Knowledge)

Web of Science provides access to scholarly science and social science research.  Great for multidisciplinary searching.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Full Text (formerly Dissertation Abstracts)

Though not scholarly, dissertations are research projects done by PhD students, guided by a faculty committee.  They have very in depth literature reviews, so they can be a gold mine for finding examples of exhaustive literature reviews.

Citation Mining

Citation mining utilizes known information about a specific article to identify other articles that are relevant.

Citation mining tools:

  • "Cited By" links in Web of Science shows the other research articles which cite the study you are reading.  This will lead you to how other scholars used new research and integrated into other studies.  A key part of your literature review process!
  • Works cited:  All research is based on previous research articles.  The literature review in a research article shows how past research influenced research design and understanding.  This is also a part of the literature review process.  If you see the same article cited over and over again in different articles, it is "seminal research" and should be included.  Seminal research is another way to describe groundbreaking research which influences all research studies after it was published.
  • Author searches:  If you find an author of a useful study, do a separate search for that author.  This person often will have written other studies which might be useful.
