Purposes
Many instructors will allow students to create alternative projects, and videos are one option.
Creating a video is great project management experience. Even a short video requires a variety of skills: time management, planning, and attention to detail. You may need to learn specific programs, and technical skills. You may also acquire better visual skills, learning what is more interesting aesthetically. You may also find empathy with your video subjects.
Creating videos helps one become aware of issues of copyright ownership, and fair use.
