Introduction to American Government, Honors

CRS Reports

The Congressional Research Office provides non-partisan research reports for members of Congress.  They are very useful to quickly learn about the laws in force behind the power of Presidential Directives.

CRS Reports about the NSA and metadata

There is growing concern about law enforcement skirting applying for warrants by simply purchasing cell phone data from data brokers.  For most information about the CRS has a plethora of reports about this topic.

CQ Researcher

Another great resource is CQ Researcher.  It has several well written reports about this topic:

Government Surveillance

Big Data and Privacy

High Tech Policing

National Security Aministration (NSA) Prompt

Is the National Security Agency’s (NSA’s) practice of gathering metadata about people’s phone and email conversations constitutional? What are the dangers of allowing the practice without proper checks? Consider various court cases, clauses in the Constitution, and normative arguments as you lay out your argument. Take a side and justify your response. If your answer is “it depends,” make sure you state what it depends upon and why.

Finding Articles

Question #1:  NSA

Using the Multisearch, you can search for "NSA or national security agency" and "metadata" and "constitution*"  Notice that I broke down the question into its different subjects, and didn't include any verbs or adjectives.  I also searched for the word "constitution*" with an asterisk at the end.  This is a searching trick in databases, and when you add it at the end of a root word, it will search for all variations of the word.

If you want to get back articles that actually talk about the legality of the metadata gathering, you can also under Filters choose "Source Types", which include Academic, Books, and Reports.  Often news/magazine stories will only give cursory information, whereas academic or professional publications will go into more depth about a subject.

Books

We have several books on the topic in the Main Library about this topic, as well as links to government reports.  You can find them in the catalog.
