Monday September 30 (room 217)
12:00p - 1:00p - Makerspace Showcase. From creating 3D printed models to building Arduino projects to collect data, more often, making items is part of graduate-level work. In this session, learn about Makerspace technologies available to you and how to utilize those in your research. A showcase of graduate student projects will be featured.
12:00p - 1:00p - Using Pivot to Find Research Funding. Introduction to using Pivot to find grant funding and research collaborators at UGA and beyond!
3:00p - 4:00p - Stress Management. Overview of stress management and coping strategies tailored to help graduate students navigate work/life balance. Learn strategies to navigate imposter syndrome and perfectionism, including immediate coping skills, relaxation & mindfulness exercises, as well as sleep and nutrition strategies that fit within the busy graduate student schedule.
12:00p - 1:00p - Introduction to Systematic Reviews. Curious about what exactly makes a review "systematic"? Join The AU/UGA Medical Partnership's Ed Sperr and Julie Gaines for an introduction to the form! We'll talk about how systematic reviews differ from other types of reviews and discuss what's involved in conducting one of your own.
3:00p - 4:00p - Building Your Scholarly Identity & Tracking Your Scholarly Accomplishments. As you progress through your professional career, you will develop a portfolio of accomplishments that will be used to build your professional reputation. Whether you create research publications or creative works, you will want to keep track of these and be sure that you get credit for your contributions. In the 21st century, there are online tools to help you create your professional profile and share it with others. In this course, you will learn more about both ORCID and UGA Elements and find out how to use both. We will show you all the support resources that are available to help. With a networked laptop, you will be able to get hands-on experience.
12:00p - 1:00p - Introduction to Library Tools. This overview session covers database searching, full-text access, requesting items not owned at UGA, EndNote, and other library tools.
3:00p - 4:00p - EndNote Advanced. In this session, learn about more advanced functions of EndNote, including editing citation styles, working with journal abbreviations, and customizing your personal EndNote library to help organize your citations in a logical way for your retrieval needs.
Friday October 4 (room 382)
10:00a - 11:00a -Keynote speaker, Emily Pentzer, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Materials Engineering at Texas A&M, What I Wish I had Known and What I Wish My Students Knew for Graduate School. Graduate school is a different experience for everyone- from what motivates someone to pursue an advanced degree, to how they chose the program, to how they approach classes and research. Graduate school can be challenging- both professionally and personally, and at times can feel isolating or like the goals and metrics of success are ill-defined, at best. This presentation will cover my path to a PhD in chemistry and professorship, my experiences as a mentor, and lessons learned on what worked, and what I wish I had known ahead of time.
3:30p - 5:00p - Workshop with Emily Pentzer. Professional and Research Goal Setting. When it comes to graduate school and your career, setting goals can help you identify what motivates you and what you want to do, and gives you an opportunity to be intentional about your career path. Goals can also give you an excuse to celebrate your progress - long before the diploma comes. This interactive workshop will help you identify what motivates you, what you want to accomplish in the year(s) to come, and how you can set yourself up for achieving these goals in a time-frame you identify. The goals will take into account graduate school and beyond.
